How does your donation help?
We all know someone who has fought with cancer. This serious illness has affected us, whether directly or indirectly.
In Estonia, cancer is diagnosed in nearly 9,000 people each year and about half of them die because the disease has progressed too far by that time. We could prevent 30% or 40% of those cases, or at least reduce the risk, by opting for a healthier lifestyle. We can treat about 1/3 of all cancer types if they are detected early.
In the last years, the Estonian Cancer Society's mobile diagnostic units for prostate and skin cancer have helped many people through early detection to prevent cancer deaths. We have come to the conclusion that we are most effective by bringing our services close to where people live: especially in small towns and rural areas where there are no specialists.
The next aim of Estonian Cancer Society is to purchase a mobile CT (computed tomography) scanner, which will help people in Estonia detect cancer at an early stage. The new device can conduct lung cancer screening and other computed tests ordered by specialists close to where the patient lives, and outside of big cities. A CT-scan provides the patient with a low radiation dose and is both irreplaceable in cancer diagnostics and very effective in cases of acute illness and major trauma.
In this way, it is possible to detect cancer before symptoms appear. Consequently, the chance for recovery from cancer is improved, as treatment can begin at a very early stage.
If every Estonian sees the necessity of computed tomography in the diagnosis of oncological diseases, we can save hundreds of lives.
