Our home sea, the Baltic Sea, is one of the five seas with the worst health in the world.

It has long been suffering from overnutrition - excess nutrients, especially nitrogen and phosphorus, which enter the sea mainly due to agriculture in the surrounding countries. Excess nutrients, ie eutrophication, causes a lot of trouble. For example, algae begin to grow rapidly and the species composition changes. Some algae also secrete toxic substances, and we see red flags prohibiting swimming on the beaches more often. In addition, eutrophication has created an ever-expanding oxygen-free dead zone in the central part of the Baltic Sea, which in turn affects the entire marine ecosystem. This is one of the reasons why cod has almost disappeared from the waters of the Baltic Sea.
