My name is Triin. I’m 18 years old, and by age I should already be starting my independent life – following my path and chasing my dreams. But for me, this journey takes a little longer. Both SOS Children’s Village and my local municipality have recognised that I need more time and support to take that step safely. I’m truly grateful for that, because it means I don’t have to do it all alone – at least not yet. But… my story is a bit more complicated. I have type 1 diabetes – a condition that requires constant care and attention every single day. The hardest part is the nighttime blood sugar drops. They creep in silently, are dangerous, and can lead to coma. At night, I simply don’t hear the alarm from my sensor and keep sleeping deeply… Right now, I live in a youth home at SOS Children’s Village. Thanks to the caring staff, I’ve avoided life-threatening situations — they respond and help. But when I move out on my own, these kind people won’t be there to wake me up or check on me. And that’s a little scary. I’ve discussed it at length with my support person and done a lot of research on my own. I believe we’ve found a solution that’s very close… I need a very special companion – a hypoglycemia alert dog. This dog can smell when my blood sugar drops and alert me. It can wake me up, bring something sweet, or call for help. It would be my night-time guardian angel and a source of safety. Together with trainer Kati Ernits, we’ve found a suitable dog – a 3-year-old female Lagotto Romagnolo. She’s smart, has excellent traits, and is ready to begin training. She’s also allergy-friendly, which is important for me. I’ve started saving for this goal – every bit I can. But as a young person, I simply can’t cover the full cost on my own. That’s why I need help. Dog and transport: €2500. Training (from autumn 2025 to spring 2026): €1650 While we’re still learning and building trust, I can stay in the youth home. When we’re ready, we’ll walk forward — together. Every small donation brings me closer to a life where I can be independent — but not alone. A life where I can sleep peacefully at night, knowing someone is watching over me.
