Due to the war, Ukraine is suffering from a shortage of food, medical and hygiene supplies; the inhabitants do not receive regular supply of water, electricity or heating. People’s homes have been destroyed; many have been left without shelter.
The Red Cross is collecting donations to support Ukrainian people on site. There are 3,000 representatives of the Ukrainian Red Cross working there right now, plus another 600 people from the International Committee of the Red Cross.
The Estonian Red Cross is part of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, which is the largest international humanitarian organisation with 192 national societies worldwide with more than 14 million volunteers. The Estonian Red Cross has a nationwide network – 17 local societies with members and volunteers. The most important areas of activity are the provision of first aid training and psychosocial aid as well as the promotion of blood donation. In the event of a major accident or crisis, volunteers help save lives by supporting the authorities responsible.
