The Estonian Food Bank is a charity organisation that works on bringing relief to people living in poverty while reducing the level of food waste. Our network includes 15 food banks all over Estonia that help people in their respective regions.

A lot of people have or will lose their jobs in the current emergency situation and many will experience significant wage cuts. This means that the number of people in need of food aid is increasing. However, the amount of food received as donations from grocery stores has decreased considerably – there simply isn’t as much surplus at this time. Due to the special circumstances, the Food Bank has had to cancel all regular food drives organised across Estonia. Last December, 45 tonnes of food was collected during a 2-day national food drive. All that food has been delivered to those in need, but we are unable to collect more donations from food drives. This means that the Food Bank is suffering from a shortage of food. You can lend a helping hand by donating to the Food Bank through the “I Love to Help” environment, thereby helping food banks across Estonia replenish their rations, so that the network is able to continue providing food aid to those in need.

Food aid from the food banks is meant as temporary aid, first and foremost, for families with small children and/or large families living below the subsistence level, but also to other least privileged individuals. Food banks get information about people in need from local social departments. Additionally, all food banks work with other charity organisations that also help people in difficult situations. Under normal circumstances, food banks provide food aid to about 9,000 people per week. Food aid is comprised of surplus food grocery stores and food donated by companies and private persons.

The organization is included on the list of income tax incentive non-profit organizations. More information on relevant taxation can be found here: Donating and taxes. www.toidupank.ee
