While wars and their causes can vary, the majority of the world’s refugees faces similar challenges: their families live in poverty, they lack food and their children cannot go to school. Many families are forced to sell their property at home to pay for living expenses. In extreme situations, poverty can even make people consider such difficult decisions as child marriages or child labour. The Estonian initiative Mondo Crisis Fund NPO offers support to war refugees and crisis victims, so that they can live in humane conditions while waiting for the conflict to end. The efforts include food assistance and hygiene packages for families, educational and sports opportunities for children, language and computer training for young people and women, psychological and medical support.
Mondo has now provided humanitarian aid to thousands of war refugees in Syria’s neighbouring countries, as well as to internally displaced persons in Ukraine and Syria and to the refugees of the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Uganda.
In the near future, Mondo intends to start providing humanitarian aid in Yemen where civil war and rising food prices have brought most of the population to the brink of famine, with as many as 80 % of the population needing external support according to the UN estimates.
- €15 to buy a food package for a Syrian family in Turkey.
- €30 to buy textbooks for a Syrian child in Lebanon.
- €175 to buy a food package for a famine-victim family in Yemen, covering 80 % of the family’s food requirements for two months.
